Section 4.8 of the Clergy Personnel Policy Manual still applies. However, the following addition is effective on January 1, 2010: Clergy employed on a full-time basis are entitled to paid sick leave of fifteen (15) days per year, which accumulate at the rate of 1.25 working days for each month of full-time employment. Sick leave will be pro-rated for part-time employees. There is no financial conversion of unused sick leave. Sick leave shall not accumulate beyond 15 days. When a priest expects to be absent from work for a prolonged period of time due to an illness or injury, remuneration will be paid up to the number of days that have accumulated in the employeeТs sick leave credits. After this, the employee should apply for benefits from the Employment Insurance Plan (EI) of the Federal Government. Because the Diocese has registered in the EI Supplemental Unemployment Benefit (SUB) Program, an employee is able to receive 55% of remuneration from EI, while the employer pays 40% during a period of unemployment due to illness, injury or quarantine. Under the current regulations, the weekly SUB payment plus the applicable weekly EI benefit rate must not exceed 95% of the employeeТs normal weekly earnings. Payments under a registered SUB plan are not considered as insurable earnings; therefore, EI premiums are not deducted. An employee is eligible for long-term disability (LTD) through the diocesan group insurance plan after 119 days. Once the employeeТs application for LTD has been approved and payments are received, then the EI benefits will cease. Sick leave will not accumulate while an employee is in receipt of prolonged sick leave, or if the priest is absent from work due to illness or injury, after sick leave has been used up.
