Resources for Ministry

The Parish Ministry Development office at 71 Bronson Avenue, Ottawa maintains a Resource Centre for the use of individuals and parishes. There are many books and videos available on a wide range of topics, including Biblical scholarship, parenting, a child's growing faith, ministry development, parish evaluation and renewal, and social issues. Some are geared towards personal edification and some are more suited to group study. In addition, a good collection of magazines, which have been published by many different faith groups and interests, is available.

A complete catalogue of the magazine, book and video holdings is available for parishes and groups.

The Resource Centre regularly adds new titles to its collection. If you are aware of a book or video that you would recommend to be added to this collection, please do not hesitate to contact the Programme Secretary at the number given below.

To make a reservation or inquiry or to volunteer, please call the Parish and Diocesan Services Office at 233-6271 extension 222. You may come in during office hours (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) but it is best to phone ahead for an appointment. This Resource Centre is for the use of all members of the diocese. We will courier your selections to you if you are reachable by Parbus (intercity bus courier).

"Library Thing"
Library Thing is an open-source software application used to create and search an online catalogue.

You may look through the catalog in either "list" or "cover" view, seeing cover designs for many items as well their reference information. You may also search the collection by tag (subject), author, title, or publication date. Please note that to search our holdings, you need to be in the Search this library field, otherwise you will wander into the collections of other members.

Our program ministry staff will be happy to assist parishes and individuals with resource-related inquiries. The Resource Centre Administrative Assistant can refer you to the appropriate staff person if you are unsure where to turn with your particular request. Diocese of Ottawa staff

Alban Institute
The Alban Institute is a US-based independent centre of learning and leadership development with a focus on mainline congregations. Founded in 1974, last year it published 20 books and hosted 38 webinars on topics ranging from managing conflict to using Facebook and Twitter in congregations.

The Diocese of Ottawa is now an institutional member of the Alban Institute. This means we receive:

  • Discount of 30% on items in the Alban Institute catalogue. If your congregation or working group is planning to place an order there, contact the Synod office resource desk (613) 233-6271, ext. 222 first to see if we can place the order and be reimbursed by you.
  • Subscriptions to the quarterly magazine Congregations, for the chairs of our Parish Ministry Development Committee and Congregational Development Subcommittee, our consultant in parish growth and renewal, and two staff members.
