Annual Workshop and Resource Fair

2008

By all accounts the fifth annual diocesan Children's Ministry workshop and resource fair held Saturday, April 12, 2008 at Christ Church, Bells Corners was a wonderful day. It was the largest ever with 80 people for lunch including Bishop John Chapman and participants from 22 Diocese of Ottawa parishes, two Lutheran churches, Almonte United Church and the Parish of Merrickville from the neighbouring Diocese of Ontario. One participant who had been on the waiting list was very happy to be called back because of a cancellation and said she would remember next year to register right away. For the first time the food was singled out for particular praise and participants even asked for recipes!

Highlights of this year's program included the delightful Pentecost Pageant presented by members of Christ Church Bells Corners as part of the "Pageants for Dummies" plenary session; a workshop on puppetry led by the Ven. Chris Dunn; and a panel discussion on "Sports & Spirituality: No Guilt Required" chaired by the Ven. Peter John Hobbs.

Past Events

2007

Forty parents, Christian educators, Sunday school teachers and volunteers took part in the fourth annual diocesan "From Generation to Generation" workshop and resource fair which was held on Sat. April 28, 2007 at St Thomas the Apostle Anglican Church in Ottawa.

In an interactive opening session, Carol Kauk, introduced attendees to Diana and Otto; two more-or-less typical Sunday School pupils from the Diocese of Ottawa. These two special guests helped participants explored the changing face of the church today. One important insight was that today's children have no memory of church in the baby boom era so there is no point in comparing today's Sunday Schools to those of a different generation. Our focus needs to be on Di and Otto's needs and hopes today.

Guest speaker, the Rev. Jennifer Pridmore's energetic and engaging talk "Raising Children of Faith . . .or How to Get Out the Door on Sunday Morning Without Cussing" struck a real chord with participants who found her "inspiring" and appreciated her sense of humour and practical biblically-based approach to faith and parenting. Jenni serves as Camp Hyanto Executive Advisor and Children and Youth Ministries Coordinator in the neighbouring diocese of Ontario.

Stewardship was an important theme at this year's event as well. Jenni Pridmore explored some practical ways to encourage stewardship in both a church and family setting; a family from the parish of All Saints Westboro (David Jones, Catriona Tapley and their two boys) shared their personal story of financial stewardship as a family; and Dr. Patricia Bays led an afternoon workshop called "Raising Generous Children".

Over the lunch break participants were invited to visit "Peaceful Place Atrium", a space in St Thomas the Apostle church dedicated to the spiritual nurture of young children using the Good Shepherd catechesis, a Montessori-like approach to faith formation. Those who took advantage of this opportunity were touched by the experience. One Sunday school teacher said she thought that children coming here would have memories for life.

An afternoon workshop "So You've Been Asked to Coordinate the Sunday School" led by the Rev. Cathy McCaig (Stafford-Whitewater) offered practical tips for Sunday School coordinators and superintendents.

The culmination of the day was a special presentation of a "From Generation to Generation" barbecue apron to Bishop Peter Coffin (who enjoys cooking) as a gift of appreciation marking his retirement as diocesan bishop. The bishop also commissioned each of the Christian educators, Sunday school teachers, parents and godparents who were present as part of a special closing worship service. The creation of this gift apron (which participants were each invited to sign with special marker pens) also served as a model for using crafts effectively in children's ministry. A handout of tips on "Using Crafts" prepared by Carol Kauk for the occasion is available through the CLN office.

Seedlings

Each month in Crosstalk a monthly children's ministry column called "Seedlings" serves as a year-round way to encourage children's ministry leaders across the diocese. Veteran Christian educator, Carol Kauk, who writes the columns is always looking for new ideas and issues to address. A binder with past columns is available on loan through the diocesan resource centre (contact 613-233-6271 ext 222 or resource-centre@ottawa.anglican.ca).

Join our E-mail List

The Gen2Gen e-mail list provides a way for Christians who are involved in ministries with children to learn from one another, connect with peers across the Diocese of Ottawa and beyond and share information, ideas and perspectives. To subscribe to this low volume list, contact Lisa Chisholm-Smith. You are free to unsubscribe at any time and your e-mail address will not be shared with anyone else.

Postings are monitored by members of the Gen2Gen working group for ideas and issues which may be picked up either by "Seedlings", a monthly children's ministry column in Crosstalk, or by the planners of our annual diocesan Gen2Gen workshop and resource fair.
