Friends of the Bishop Dinner
2011 Dinner
November 15, 2011 • Hampton Inn, Ottawa • Keynote speaker: The Rt. Rev. Terry Dance
The church year ended on a lively note in the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa, with the annual Friends of the Bishop Dinner, our signature event.
Parish and committee members, well wishers, corporate sponsors, community partners, and service providers responded to an invitation received by mail or
viewed at the website and in Crosstalk. They purchased tickets, perhaps sponsored a whole table or two, and participated in a lively evening of entertainment,
an opportunity to bid on a wide array of silent auction items, and they enjoyed a delicious meal in the company of friends. The evening is a
much-anticipated social event!
Proceeds from the evening contribute to the Bishop's Discretionary Fund, which our Bishop uses to assist people in unexpected and often difficult circumstances. Because of the generosity of his many friends, he is able to help people quietly and confidentially, separate from the diocesan budget and annual report.
Bishop Terry Dance was consecrated Suffragan Bishop of Huron and Bishop of Norfolk in June 2009. Prior to that, Bishop Terry was Dean of St. Paul's Cathedral in London for nine years. It was during that time that the Diocese of Mthatha in South Africa became a passion and personal project for him. Bishop Terry's work with orphans and victims of HIV/AIDS was a life-changing experience for him and, to date, the "Bishop's Wellness Fund for Africa" has generated over $400,000 to care for orphans, AIDS victims and the poorest of the poor in this African diocese. Bishop Terry's work, along with that of his wife Diane, continues to this day. They spend five to six weeks every couple of years in the Diocese of Mthatha, working with the Church and schools, doing whatever they can to be useful. A dynamic and compelling speaker, Bishop Terry will transport you to the other side of the world through his images and stories of heartbreak and triumph, introducing you to the hope-filled and spirit-led people of Mthatha.
