INCUMBENT, PARISH OF DEEP RIVER

Description:
|
LOCATION OF PARISH AND DESCRIPTION OF COMMUNITY
Located approximately 2 + hours west of Ottawa between Highway 17 (TransCanada) and the Ottawa River. The Town of
Deep River has a population of 4,100 and the surrounding Town of Laurentian Hills, 3,000. Deep River is home to the Chalk
River Laboratories of Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. Canadian Forces Base Petawawa is 35 minutes east. They are the largest
employers in the area and personnel from both live and take an active part in life of the community.
Deep River is a town where children are safe on the streets and moms and dads are relaxed about letting them walk to school
and to their friends on their own. Serious crime is non existent. Some people still leave their cars and houses unlocked.
However there are occasions when items are taken from garages and vehicles when they are left open.
The town boasts a pre-school in three locations, Deep River, Point Alexander and Chalk River as well as JK to Grade 12. There
is a branch of Algonquin College in Pembroke, 45 minutes east. The Town has a hospital, doctors, a family health centre and
dentists. The Regional Hospital is in Pembroke.
BUILDINGS, CLERGY HOUSING ARRANGEMENTS
The Church building is an A-frame construction built in 1962. It is well maintained and of open plan. The Sanctuary is large
and open with an Altar rail on all four sides. The Parish sold its Rectory years ago and Clergy are responsible for finding a
house to buy or rent. The Parish provides a generous housing allowance and funds not only their share of Clergy Conferences
but the Priests portion as well.
WORSHIP
Worship is the Celebration of the Holy Eucharist; said service at 8:00 a.m. and sung at 10:00 a.m. The primary book for
service is the BAS. BCP is used under some special circumstances. The music is a blend of traditional and contemporary, with
pipe organ, piano, trumpets, guitars and an 18 member music team (choir not robed). In 2009 the average weekly attendance
was 100 souls.
PARISH LIFE AND MINISTRY
The Parish is active with Bible study, Youth Bible study, youth group, music, a Pastoral Care team, active Prayer Chain, a
committed Parish Council, Mother’s Union, Sunday School and EPIC (for youth older than Sunday school and younger than
adult) and a Reception committee (are they ever good cooks). We enjoy a large Lay participation in services with four Lay
Readers, Chalice bearers, lesson readers, leaders of Prayers of the People, greeters, as well as coffee and fellowship following
the 10:00 a.m. service.
Over the past several years, the Parish has developed a Parish Plan to grow His Ministries that we offer to our community and
to the world which God made, and are considering renovation to the building to improve access and to improve the
infrastructure required to support our ministries for the foreseeable future.
The Parish has three part time staff; a Secretary, Organist/Music Director and Sexton.
HOPES FOR THE FUTURE
We know that we will continue to grow because “We believe and trust that God will send us the Priest that He wants
and that we need at this time and in this place. God will provide for us, as God always has.” Our hope is based on
Faith in our Living God and Saviour and we know whom He provides we be rooted in the traditional tests of Anglicanism, the
Authority of Scripture, Tradition and Reason.
