Ottawa Anglicans are responding to famine in the Horn of Africa

PWRDF update August 22, 2011
The worst drought to hit the Horn of Africa in six decades is currently affecting up to 10 million people. Through the Primate's World Relief and Development Fund and other charities, Anglicans in the Diocese of Ottawa have begun to respond to this most recent emergency in Africa. The mix of drought, skyrocketing food prices, food shortages, and deaths of livestock in large numbers has combined to make this situation a devastating one for millions of people in the region.

PWRDF is responding to the East Africa emergency through the ACT Alliance and the Canadian Foodgrains Bank (CFGB). An initial $115,000 grant has been sent by PWRDF, supporting work in Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia.

PWRDF is responding in Somalia through the ACT Alliance. 3.7 million people are affected by the famine in southern Somalia- fully half the population. 262 tons of flour and 52 tons of cooking oil will be distributed in Gedo province. ACT is also involved in supporting relief efforts in the largest refugee camp in the world at Dadaab, Kenya.

PWRDF is working in Kenya through the Anglican Church of Kenya and the Canadian Foodgrains Bank. Food is being purchased from local farmers and distributed to those in need, including refugees at the Dadaab camp, putting money into the local economy and saving the time and expense of shipping food around the world.

PWRDF is responding in Ethiopia through ACT by providing food, health care, drought preparation training for farmers and "food for work" projects that include tree planting, prevention of soil erosion and road construction.

The Canadian Government is matching donations: From the Canadian International Development Agency's (CIDA) website: "For every dollar an individual Canadian donates over a 10-week period (retroactive to July 6, 2011, and ending September 16, 2011) to an eligible registered Canadian charity responding to the drought in East Africa, the Government will contribute an equivalent amount to the East Africa Drought Relief Fund. The Government of Canada will administer the relief fund separately, disbursing funds to organizations best suited to make an effective and real difference in the lives of people affected by the drought."

Canadian government is matching all donations to famine relief
Dear Friends:

You will have heard by now that the Canadian Government is matching donations made to the famine in East Africa: See below:

For every dollar an individual Canadian donates over a 10-week period (retroactive to July 6, 2011, and ending September 16, 2011) to an eligible registered Canadian charity responding to the drought in East Africa, the Government will contribute an equivalent amount to the East Africa Drought Relief Fund. The Government of Canada will administer the relief fund separately, disbursing funds to organizations best suited to make an effective and real difference in the lives of people affected by the drought.

Donations may be receipted by the parish and funds forwarded to PWRDF, clearly identified East Africa Drought Relief. As CIDA is requesting weekly updates of funds raised, please forward collections as frequently as possible.

It is our privilege to serve God's people in their time of need. Thank you for your help and support during past crises. For the additional workload that this appeal may generate, we thank you in advance.

God Bless you,
Jill Martin
